Lengua caucásica noroccidental con importantes grupos dialectales orientales y occidentales.

Hasta la década de 1860, los grupos de habla cherkés vivían en toda la región noroccidental del Cáucaso, incluida la costa del mar Negro. Después de la conquista de esta región efectuada por los rusos en 1864, la mayor parte de los hablantes de cherkés emigraron al Imperio otomano y se establecieron finalmente en lo que en la actualidad es Turquía, Siria, Jordania e Israel. En Rusia permanecieron sólo algunos enclaves dispersos de hablantes de cherkés occidental. Un mayor número de hablantes de cherkés oriental permanecieron en el territorio; la mayoría vive hoy en las repúblicas rusas del Cáucaso norte. Actualmente, los hablantes rusos de cherkés suman alrededor de 550.000. No se puede determinar la cantidad fuera de Rusia, porque muchas personas de etnia cherkés han cambiado su lengua por la que es dominante en sus países de adopción.
